Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • 45 medium russet potatoes (or Yukon gold potatoes or frozen hash browns)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup whole milk (or heavy cream)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or skim milk or non-dairy milk)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the diced onion to the skillet with the beef and cook until the onion becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper to the beef and onion mixture, stirring well to combine.
  5. Wash and slice the potatoes thinly, using a mandoline for even slices if possible.
  6. In a medium bowl, whisk together milk, heavy cream, and a pinch of salt and pepper to create a creamy base.
  7. In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom, followed by half of the beef mixture, half of the cream sauce, and a layer of cheese.
  8. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, cream sauce, and top with the remaining cheese.
  9. Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  10. Let the casserole sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
