Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup of warm milk (110°F) with 1 tablespoon of sugar and 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, 1/4 cup of melted butter, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix until the dough comes together.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add more flour as needed.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters to cut out your donuts and holes. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Cover the shaped donuts with a cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  7. In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the donuts in batches, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. In a bowl, whisk together 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1/4 cup of milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.
  9. While the donuts are still warm, dip the tops into the glaze and let them sit on a wire rack to allow the glaze to set.
