Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour (if making from scratch)
  • 1 ½ cups of sugar (if making from scratch)
  • ¾ cup of cocoa powder (if making from scratch)
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder (if making from scratch)
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda (if making from scratch)
  • 3 large eggs
  • Vegetable oil
  • Hot water
  • Chocolate pudding mix
  • Whipped topping
  • Chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and hot water. Beat the mixture for about 2 minutes until it’s smooth and well combined.
  3. Fold in the chocolate pudding mix until fully incorporated.
  4. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. While the cakes cool, prepare the filling by mixing the whipped topping with half of the chocolate chips. You can also add a bit of vanilla extract for extra flavor.
  6. Once the cakes have cooled, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread the whipped topping mixture over the top. Place the second cake layer on top and press down gently.
  7. Use the remaining whipped topping to frost the top and sides of the cake. Sprinkle the rest of the chocolate chips on top for decoration.
  8. For best results, refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving.

Keywords: Use high-quality chocolate and cocoa powder for the best flavor. Don’t overmix the batter to avoid a denser cake. Feel free to add espresso powder for a mocha flavor or vanilla extract to the whipped topping for extra depth.
