Ingredients

  • Saltine Crackers (about 40 crackers)
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Light Brown Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Chocolate Chips (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Flaky Sea Salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil, lightly greased.
  2. Lay out your saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the unsalted butter and light brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until melted and dissolved.
  4. Once it comes to a boil, continue boiling for exactly 3 to 5 minutes until it thickens and turns a rich amber color.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract carefully.
  6. Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged crackers, spreading gently.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 to 7 minutes until bubbling.
  8. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee and let them sit for about 5 minutes to melt.
  9. Spread the melted chocolate into an even layer over the toffee-covered crackers.
  10. Sprinkle flaky sea salt generously over the melted chocolate layer.
  11. Let the crackers cool completely at room temperature for at least 30 minutes, then refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours until set.
  12. Once chilled, lift the slab off the baking sheet and break it into irregular pieces.
