Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup fresh sweet basil leaves, packed
  • 68 medium to large lemons, juiced (yielding 1 to 1.5 cups of juice)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 45 cups filtered water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Strawberry Basil Simple Syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of filtered water over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add hulled and sliced strawberries and lightly bruised basil leaves to the saucepan, bringing the mixture to a gentle simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat, cover, and let steep for at least 30 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large heatproof bowl or pitcher, pressing on the solids to extract all liquid. Discard solids and cool the syrup in the fridge for at least an hour.
  4. Squeeze Fresh Lemon Juice: Roll the lemons on the counter, slice in half, and juice them using a citrus juicer to yield about 1 to 1.5 cups of lemon juice.
  5. Combine and Dilute: In a large pitcher, combine the cooled strawberry basil syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and 3-4 cups of cold filtered water. Adjust the water to taste.
  6. Chill and Serve: Ensure the lemonade is thoroughly chilled before serving. Pour over ice and garnish with fresh strawberry slices, basil leaves, or lemon wheels.
